Understanding Medicare Basics

Knowledge is your best tool when choosing a plan

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 and older, though it also covers certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific health conditions. It helps cover the cost of hospital stays, doctor visits, prescription drugs, and more. Understanding how Medicare works is the first step to making sure you have the right coverage for your needs.

Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health services.

Part B (Medical Insurance) covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment.

Part C (Medicare Advantage) is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits through private insurance companies, often bundling Parts A, B, and D together with additional benefits.

Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage) helps cover the cost of prescription medications and is available as a standalone plan or as part of a Medicare Advantage plan.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans replace Original Medicare by bundling your hospital, medical, and usually prescription drug coverage into a single plan. They often include additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage, and typically use provider networks.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans work alongside Original Medicare to help pay for out-of-pocket costs such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These plans are standardized by letter (Plan A, Plan G, Plan N, etc.) and allow you to see any provider that accepts Medicare.

Both options have their advantages. The right choice depends on your healthcare needs, budget, preferred doctors, and how you like to manage your coverage. That's where I can help.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): A seven-month window around your 65th birthday (three months before, your birthday month, and three months after) when you can first sign up for Medicare.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15 through December 7 each year. During this time, you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, return to Original Medicare, or join/change a Part D prescription drug plan.

Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period: You have a one-time, six-month window that begins the month your Medicare Part B becomes effective. During this period, you have a guaranteed right to buy any Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy sold in your state — regardless of health conditions. Insurance companies cannot deny you coverage or charge you more due to pre-existing conditions during this window. This is one of the most important enrollment periods to be aware of, as your options may be more limited once it closes.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEP): Certain life events — such as moving, losing employer coverage, or qualifying for Medicaid — may trigger a special enrollment period that allows you to make changes outside of the standard windows.

Not sure which enrollment period applies to you? I can help you figure that out.

With dozens of plans available in most areas, choosing the right Medicare coverage can feel overwhelming. A licensed insurance agent can help you compare your options, understand the fine print, and find a plan that fits your specific healthcare needs and budget.

My services come at no additional cost to you — insurance agents are compensated directly by the insurance carriers, not by the clients we serve. My job is to make sure you have the information you need to make an informed decision.
